Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials received a call regarding a bomb threat at Whitney High School around 12:50 p.m. Thursday afternoon, and shortly thereafter the school was placed on lockdown. A memo sent to a parent said that a person called the Cerritos Station and threatened to detonate a bomb at the school unless they received $10,000. A spokesperson for the ABC Unified School District could not confirm the report regarding the money request sent in the memo. More than 10 squad cars were seen outside the school as the investigation was being conducted. Students are being escorted by deputies to Cerritos Park East to be reunited with their parents, who should have their IDs with them to speed up the process, officials said.Deputies are continuing their investi...California bill would require schools to notify parents if their child identifies as transgender

OAKLAND — Just months after a drawn-out battle over efforts to close several Oakland Unified School District campuses— an issue that last year led to sit-ins and even a hunger strike — the board that voted to reject those closures in January may be reversing itself. It now appears that the possibility of shuttering schools, or at least merging the smallest ones with better-resourced campuses, can’t be dismissed so easily in an embattled district that continues to struggle financially.According to recently approved budget adjustments, about one-fifth of the $10 million freed up by the school board’s latest plan would come from potentially merging some of the district’s campuses ahead of the 2024-25 school year. The March 9 decision signaled a dramatic and sudden change of course by the Oakland school board, which in January had rescinded the planned closures of five schools — the ones remaining on the schedule after Parker and La Escuelita elementary...NBA suspends Warriors’ Draymond Green after his latest technical foul

By Daniel Dale | CNNA conservative commentator with a substantial Twitter following went viral late last week by making false claims about the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 — and Twitter owner Elon Musk amplified some of the misinformation, pushing it to millions of people. The conservative commentator, Chuck Callesto, inaccurately tweeted that various publicly available videos of January 6 had been “censored.” Musk amplified one of these claims. Callesto also put inaccurate captions on other January 6 footage to push a baseless narrative that the riot perpetrated by Trump supporters was actually carried out by left-wing Antifa activists. Here is a fact check of three of Callesto’s tweets.A comedian, not AntifaOn Friday, Callesto tweeted a video of a man who was putting on pro-Trump attire and urging another man to do the same in order to “blend in.” Callesto wrote: “JUST IN: Previously censored video re-emerges showing ANT...Letters: Abusing racehorses | Praise achievements | Trans rights | Child care | Transfer is craven

Two died from colic, a terrible affliction, but mostly preventable if horses aren’t fed hard-to-digest, carbohydrate-loaded feed to boost their energy to race abnormally fast. Another victim collapsed after winning a race and sustained a severe injury, the result of horses being trained and raced before they reach musculoskeletal maturity. She was euthanized immediately. The causes of death of the other two remain undisclosed.Premature deaths aside, horses are tormented by being kept in 12-by-12-foot stalls 23 hours a day and prodded to race with pain-inflicting instruments. As they become unprofitable, some end up abandoned or in slaughterhouses abroad. When we realize that horseracing isn’t a sport but a legal betting vehicle, it becomes clear why the industry treats the horses it claims to be well-cared-...Three-bedroom home sells in Oakland for $2.8 million
