Report: Job Vacancies Piling Up In Human Services Sector The pandemic, the “Great Resignation” and high inflation has exacerbated an already-strapped human services industry in Massachusetts, raising vacancy rates for jobs that provide services for elderly, disabled and mentally ill populations up to an estimated 20 percent last fall, according to a new report. There are 160,000 jobs in human services but a declining working age population and increased service needs mean some of the state’s most vulnerable residents have less access to these services, the report says.A sample of human services providers surveyed in October and November of 2022 reported that of their more than 13,000 full-time, part-time and per diem client-facing positions, the vacancy rate was 27 percent. Microsoft, Apple and Google have since been working to make passkeys a reality.Apple rolled out its passkey option with the release of iOS 16 in June, allowing people to use the technology across apps, including Apple Wallet. It replaced it with language that said it will consider a range of factors in “determining the extent” to which future hikes might be needed.Speaking at a news conference, Chair Jerome Powell said the Fed has yet to decide whether to suspend its rate hikes. But he pointed to the change in the statement’s language as confirming at least that possibility. The Fed’s rate increases since March 2022 have more than doub...

Bruins beat: Brad Marchand has all the qualities of a captain No one knows whether Patrice Bergeron will be back for another year. But if Bergeron does decide to hand over his No. 37 to equipment manager Keith Robinson for its inevitable ascension to the Garden rafters, there should be little doubt about which player should be getting the ‘C’ that’s been affixed to that jersey the last few of years. As he’s matured and grown from being a player who wrestled with – and often lost to – his emotions on the ice, Brad Marchand has grown into an insightful voice in the dressing room who is as good as anyone in articulating the state of the team. And the competitiveness that has always been the hallmark of his game was plainly evident in the playoffs. He was able to elevate his game from the regular season – when he battled inconsistency following double hip surgery – to record 10 points in the seven-game loss to the Panthers. When  Bergeron and David Krejci were out, Marchand was the tone-setter for the team that bui...

But the Fed also signaled that it may now pause the streak of 10 rate hikes that have made borrowing for consumers and businesses steadily more expensive. In a statement after its latest policy meeting, the Fed said that while the banking system is “sound and resilient," the upheaval in the financial system could slow borrowing, spending and growth. It reiterated that the impact of pullback in bank lending “remains uncertain.”The Fed's rate increases over the past 14 months have more than doubled mortgage rates, elevated the costs of auto loans, credit card borrowing and business loans and heightened the risk of a recession. Home sales have plunged as a result. The Fed’s latest move, which raised its benchmark rate to roughly 5.1%, could further increase borrowing costs.Yet the Fed’s efforts have only partly ...
